Local Offer

Local Offer Description

We are a community based watersports centre offering mainly canoeing/sailing/windsurfing and rafting activities.

We have been working with people who have special educational needs and/or disabilities for over 20 years.

We find that the activities boost self-confidence and enable them to succeed in learning new skills.

After initial sessions, they can go on to join one of our affiliated clubs and participate on an equal footing with other like-minded people who accept them for what they are – just other paddlers or sailors.

Our main centre is in Amble, but much of our activity is run at DruridgeBayCountryPark, where we have a base.

We cater for all ages from 8 upwards.  We have suitable boats for a wide range of physical disabilities, although we do not at present have hoisting facilities.

Contact our office to arrange a booking.

Costs vary:  a group of up to 8 would cost  £140 for a half-day session.

Service users will tell us what they want to achieve from the sessions they book, and we will do our best to provide this.

The buildings are all fully wheelchair accessible, and our lake building has a large disabled changing/shower/toilet room.

We have a range of strategies for helping those with physical disabilities to access the craft, and ensuring they are comfortable in them.

Most of our staff have had disability awareness training specific to sailing or canoeing activities.  2 of our canoeing instructors are wheelchair users themselves.
