Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

Adderlane First School is an inclusive school and may offer the following range of provision to support children with SEND

Intervention

Social Skills programmes/support including strategies to enhance self-esteem

We offer Emotional Literacy groups and support activities.

 Access to a supportive environment – IT facilities/equipment/resources (inc. preparation)

Classrooms all include I-pads, computers, interactive whiteboards and listening centres.

 Strategies/programmes to support speech and language

‘Time to Talk’ sessions work on the Speech Plan devised by the Speech and Language Therapist. This then forms part of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) to support work in the classroom.

 Mentoring activities

‘Nurture Groups’ provide opportunities for a range of supportive social activities.

 Access to strategies/programmes to support Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy needs

We access Jigsaw Therapy sessions, run the recommended plan and adapt Nurture Group activities as necessary.

 Strategies to reduce anxiety/promote emotional wellbeing (including communication with parents)

There are regular meetings with parents and children. Advice and support are offered, using expert outside agencies where necessary.

 Strategies to support/develop literacy inc. reading

‘Read Write Inc’ and ‘Superstar Groups’ offer a bespoke Literacy curriculum for children with Special Educational Needs and Disability.

 Strategies to support modify behaviour

Good to Green system of Behaviour Management in operation throughout the school. There is also a house points system with playground leaders and buddies.

 Strategies to support/develop numeracy

1 to 1 numeracy support sessions.

 Provision to facilitate/support access to the curriculum

Trained and skilled teaching assistants in all classes. Current and effective technology such as I pads, computers and interactive whiteboards.

 Strategies/support to develop independent learning

A variety of planning and teaching styles are adapted to meet the needs of the children . This is supported by trained teaching assistants who help implement IEPs.

 Support/supervision at unstructured times of the day including personal care

There are visual prompts throughout school for hand washing, personal hygiene and positive behaviour. This is supported by teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors and kitchen staff.

 Planning and assessment

Assessing Pupils Progress (APP) and Classroom Monitor (interactive electronic assessment) supplement National Curriculum assessments and Individual Education Plans.

 Liaison/Communication with Professionals/Parents, attendance at meetings and preparation of reports

There are open afternoons throughout the Autumn and Spring Terms with parent interviews during the Summer Term. This includes a written report. There is additional communication through the Reading Record Book, on the school website and on the school blog.

 Access to Medical Interventions

The School Nurse is used regularly to support work at home and in school. Other specialist services also used on a needs basis include: Teacher of the Deaf, Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Occupational Health, Physiotherapy and the Children and Young Peoples Service.

  For children with complex SEND, the frequency of such provision may result in the school applying for additional funding to support a child, known as Exceptional Needs Funding.
