Decisions are made collaboratively between parents/carers, the setting and other professionals.

 6. How do you communicate with service users and how are they

involved in decision making/planning?

We have a parent prospectus/information pack which provides all the relevant information about our provision /services.

Each child has a key person, who is the main link for general communication; gathering information from parents and keeping them up to date about their child’s progress.

Every child has their own on-line learning journal using Tapestry which gives parents/carers access to our policies and procedures, annual reports along with photo’s and videos of their child’s learning.Parents can comment and contribute to their child’s learning journey on-line via Tapestry.

The key person completes the learning journey  which captures each child’s development through the setting.

Our setting has a dedicated Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, (SENCO) who has responsibility for supporting inclusion in our setting. The SENCO supports staff to develop their capacity in meeting the needs of all children.

We have access to a range of information and leaflets through the local Authority Early Years Team and local Children’s Centre, to help support parents. Some of these documents are available in different languages. We have signed up to receive the local children’s centre newsletter and use this to signpost parents to relevant training, groups and support services.

We have regular parent meeting ad carry out an annual parent questionnaire to gain your views to help us develop our service.

 7. Is your service fully accessible?

Our building is wheelchair accessible. Although we have a small indoor environment, it is flexible in it’s layout to enable all children to be able to move around freely and make choices about their play and learning.

We have changing facilities which are suitable for all children and we are able to create areas for quiet time and sleep when required.

We have space where we can talk to parents confidentially.

We are committed to ensuring all children in our setting participate meaningfully. We do have a very small amount of funding within our budget to support SEND. However, where children require additional support, there is a system whereby we are able to apply for ‘top up funding’ to enable us to increase staffing to enable us to meet the specific needs of children more effectively. This is reviewed on a regular basis.

We can gain advice and support from LA inclusion and health services to help us in meeting children’s individual needs.

 8. What training are the staff supporting children and young people with

SEND had or are having?

We have access to support from the LA Early Years Team and training directory, and as members of the Early Years Alliance have on-line access to training. This provides a range of CPD opportunities to hep us keep up to date and develop further skills and knowledge in working with young children.

We access support from the LA Early Years Inclusion Coordinator whoprovides advice and guidance and can provide additional support to us when we have a child with specific needs that requires a specialist approach.

We have adopted the Local Authority policy for inclusion which is the ‘Northumberland Early Years SEND and Inclusion Procedures. This padlet and associated training provides a specific approach to observing, assessing and planning for children’s inclusion needs.

We use a ‘person centred’ approach to gather the views of children and parents using our service. If we have a child in our setting with additional needs, we work closely with the family to share information and plan holistically for the child’s needs. We review each child’s progress on a regular basis and engage with other inclusion services as relevant to achieve best outcomes.

Staff have undertaken the following specific training to meet the needs of children in our setting :

  • Makaton Signing
